Phone Troubleshooting

  1. I don’t hear a dial tone when I pick up the phone.
  2. I hear noise or static on the line.
  3. I have unknown voices on the line.
  4. People cannot call me.
  5. I cannot make local calls.
  6. I cannot make long distance calls.
  7. I have a wiring problem.
  8. Unknown problem.

I don’t hear a dial tone when I pick up the phone.

First check to be sure:

  • All receivers are on the hook.
  • The phone line is plugged into the jack.
  • If applicable, make sure the phone is connected to the power outlet.
  • If applicable, make sure the batteries are charged.

If the problem persists, make sure the problem is on all of your phone equipment, not just one isolated phone. If you suspect one phone is not working, unplug that phone and take it to a working jack. If the phone works when connected to the new jack, you can isolate the trouble to that one phone. If the problem is not isolated, you should keep troubleshooting or contact the 702 Repair Department.

I hear noise or static on the line.

  • If you have external equipment (i.e. modem or answering machine) attached to your phone, disconnect it. If it is a cordless phone, check the batteries.
  • Next, plug a corded phone into the phone jack you are having trouble with. If the problem is not an isolated phone, you should keep troubleshooting or report your ticket to the 702 Repair Department.
  • Note if the static/noise is constant or intermittent? Is it during a specific time of day?
  • Do you have DSL? Make sure you have filters on your phones. Do the filters need to be replaced? Contact the Repair Department for more information.

I have unknown voices on the line.

  • First, test to make sure that the problem is occurring with all of your phone equipment.
    • If you have a cordless phone, unplug it and try a corded phone in the same jack. Cordless phones are the most common cause of cross-talk.
    • Make a test call on the corded phone to see if you can still hear the cross-talk.
  • If the problem is not an isolated phone, you should keep troubleshooting or report your ticket to the 702 Repair Department.

People cannot call me.

  • First, make sure there is nothing wrong with your phone equipment. You can check this by going around to each phone in your home and unplugging your phones. Then go back to each phone and plug them in one at a time and listen for a dial tone.
  • Next, make sure Call Forwarding is not enabled. (link to calling features page)
  • Note: what do callers hear when trying to call your number? Are they getting a recorded message or a busy signal?

If the problem persists you should keep troubleshooting or report your problem to the 702 Repair Department.

I cannot make long distance calls.

  • If 702 is your long distance provider, you will need to call the Repair Department. If you are hearing a message when trying to place an outbound long distance call, please give us that information in its entirety. That message can help us isolate the problem.

If the problem persists you should keep troubleshooting or report your ticket to the 702 Repair Department.

I have a wiring problem.

  • If you suspect that you need repair inside your home, these steps will help you identify which phone jack is causing the trouble:
    1. Unplug the phone you are currently using and plug a working phone in that jack.
    2. If the phone requires a power outlet, verify it is plugged into a working outlet.
    3. If the above steps don’t take care of the problem, the jack may need servicing.
  • If you are experiencing a problem with more than one phone jack, the trouble could be inside wiring. A 702 technician can determine what the cost would be for inside wiring. If you rent, check with your property manager to see if they cover the expense.
