Trouble Shooting Answers
Q: What are the incoming and outgoing mail server addresses to setup my mail client for POP3 access?
A: For the 702com.net domain, the incoming and outgoing mail server addresses are both the same: mail.702com.net. If you have a domain hosted by 702 Communications, your incoming and outgoing server addresses are: mail.(yourdomainhere), e.g. if your domain is ‘acme.net’, then your server address is: mail.acme.net.

Q: I can load web pages, but I can’t access my email through my mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc).
A: The two most likely causes of this are an incorrectly configured mail filtering program and/or a firewall blocking access on your system. Try temporarily disabling these features, commonly part of the anti-virus program you have installed, and seeing if you can send and receive email. If, after disabling one or both of these options, you are able to send and receive email, you can either leave them disabled or configure them correctly before turning them back on again.

Q: How do I access the Red Condor SPAM filter to adjust my settings?
A: Any day you have mail that is filtered by the Red Condor service, you are sent an email listing the items that were prevented from reaching your inbox. In the second paragraph above the items listed, there is a link to your ‘Personal Dashboard.’ By double-clicking on this link, you are able to access the settings specific to the filter for your email account. The first time you use this link you will be prompted to create a password for your Personal Dashboard. Make certain to remember this password. Once you have created your password, you can access your Personal Dashboard from anywhere using your email address and the password you created. It may also be a good idea to bookmark the site, or save it as one of your favorites in your web browser for easy access from your home or work computer. Download the Red Condor Users Guide (pdf) to learn more.

Q: What is an anti-virus program, and do I need it?
A: If you are using a Windows operating system (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP or Vista), absolutely, without a doubt, yes! Anti-virus programs help to protect your computer from malicious software that can be used to access your personal information, interfere with the normal operation of your computer system, and/or use your bandwidth and make your Inernet connection seem slower. In order for an anti-virus program to be at its most effective it must have access to the newest virus definition updates, which allow it to identify and remove new viruses as they are developed, and it also must be able to run a full system scan, at the least, on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Most anti-virus programs will require an annual subscription.

Q: What is the largest sized file can I send and receive through my 702 Communications email address?
A: The email server is limited to sending or receiving individual emails, including all attachments, at 5.00 MB. Any emails larger than this may not be sent out or received by the mail server. If you need to send an email larger then 5.00 MB, you will need to compress the files attached to the email, or separate the attached files into more than one email in order to avoid exceeding the 5.00 MB limit.

Q: My email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Mac Mail) keeps downloading the same email messages over and over, and I get an error message stating it was ‘unable to complete a task’?
A: The most likely cause of this is someone has sent you a particularly large file attached to an email. The mail clients listed above only allow a certain amount of time to download each message to your computer before they give up and present you with an error message. By visiting the website for your email account at http://webmail.702com.net you can download the attached file(s) and delete the large email (from both the ‘Inbox’ and Trash folders) and then go back and use your preferred email client.

Q: I keep receiving SPAM, even though I have Red Condor protecting my email account. How can I get it to stop?
A: The best thing to do is to forward the SPAM you are receiving as an attachment to spam@my.702com.redcondor.com . Red Condor can then evaluate the unwanted email and figure out why it wasn’t stopped by the filter. If you are unsure how to forward a message as an attachment, look for the ‘Help’ options for your email client.

Q: Why isn’t my speed showing 1.5Mb when I run a speed test?
A: The bandwidth, or speed, of your connection is the speed at which the DSL is sent out on the line. There is some loss of bandwidth depending on the length and quality of the phone line the DSL has to travel over to reach your modem. In addition, if you have more than one device connected they all share the bandwidth provided over your DSL connection, which means not every system or device will have 1.5 Mb, but they will all be sharing the same 1.5 Mb between them. Not all systems connected to a network will share the bandwidth equally, but generally operates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis unless the router you are using has been programmed otherwise.

Q: Can I access my 702 email account away from my home/office computer system?
A: Yes, you can. You can access any new mail you haven’t already downloaded by logging into the 702 Communications email server in your web browser (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc) at the following address: http://webmail.702com.net . If you are using an email client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Mac Mail, etc) you cannot see emails that you have already downloaded with that program except from your normal “home” system. You will need your account name, which is everything before the @ in your email address, and the valid password for your account. If you are unable to remember the correct username and/or password for your account, simply call the Help Desk and we will be happy to assist you.
